ST. PETER, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris Cougars (1-3) failed to stay with the Gustavus Gusties (3-0) on Saturday, falling 82-67. Five Cougars scored in double figures, led by
Kendra Wycoff who had 16 points.
Tori Holt added 13 and
Emily Auch had 12.
Kayla Kraemer and
Cori Becker each added 10 points.
The Gusties took an early ten point lead, starting the game on a 12-2 run. Morris closed the gap to four but never got within a single possession. Gustavus pushed their lead back to double digits soon after for the second time. The Cougars were able to get within five on a couple more occasions before the Gusties took a double digit lead for good with 5:36 left in the second half.
At the break Gustavus held a 42-28 lead thanks to shooting 50.0% from the field. Auch had eight first half points to lead UMM. Wycoff added seven points and two rebounds.
Unfortunately things did not get better for the Cougars in the second half and Gustavus extended their lead to 19 just three minutes into the half. Morris did go on a 12-2 run cutting the lead to nine with 14:29 left but could not get any closer. Gustavus used a 19-8 run to put the game away, taking a 20 point lead with 7:16 left.
Tori Holt had a nice second half for UMM, scoring 11 points on 3-7 shooting and 5-7 from the line. Wycoff added nine more points in the second half after going 3-6 from three point range. Gustavus stayed hot from the field shooting 56.0% in the second half.
