MORRIS, Minn. – After shooting nearly 52% from the field in the first half, the Cougars (1-6) were held to 40.5% by the Presentation Saints (5-1) in the second half. That difference allowed the Saints to complete a comeback they started in the first half as they earned an 87-70 win.
Minnesota Morris jumped out to a 10-2 lead forcing a Saints timeout just over four minutes into the game. The lead for UMM reached double figures at the halfway point, taking a 22-12 lead. Morris' lead was at its largest with five minutes left in the half, leading 32-20. With UMM leading 37-27 with 2:49 left the Saints went on a 12-2 run to tie the game just before the half.
The lead traded hands on a couple occasions in the early minutes of the second half. Presentation got some breathing room when they took a 56-50 lead but Morris stayed in their shadow. With the deficit still at six and 8:21 left, Morris allowed the Saints to go on a run. Presentation would push their lead to 11 just over a minute later and the Cougars never recovered. The Saints finished the game on a 14-4 run to earn the 17 point victory.
RJ Dean led the Cougars with 19 points on 7-14 shooting.
CD Douglas was crucial to the Cougars early lead, scoring eight of his 12 points in the first four and half minutes of the game.
Tyler Ukkelburg came off the bench to score 12 points in 16 minutes of action.
Neil Helgeson also finished in double figures scoring ten points.
Rebounds became a part of the story as Presentation finished with 16 more rebounds than UMM. They allowed the Cougars just eight offensive rebounds on 35 missed shots.
Morris is off until Monday when they host Carleton College at 7 p.m.
