Paul Grove earned his 99
th UMAC win on Friday night as he guided the Cougars (4-9, 2-0 UMAC) to a 89-66 win over Bethany Lutheran (1-12, 1-1 UMAC).
Neil Helgeson tied his career high with 26 points on 6-11 shooting. He was 10-11 from the foul line in the game.
The Cougars started the game on a 17-0 run in the opening six minutes of the first half. Bethany missed their first nine shots of the game. Morris lead 21-5 by the midway point of the game. The Vikings cut the lead to ten at 30-20 but UMM responded with a 7-2 run to take a 37-22 lead with less than 90 seconds remaining in the half.
Minnesota Morris shot 57.1% from the field in the first half while holding BLC to just 8-27 from the field. The Cougars scored 12 points off six Viking turnovers. Helgeson led the team with 12 points on 4-5 shooting, including 3-3 from behind the arc.
Joe Roggenbuck had eight points and
John Haseman added seven.
The two teams traded buckets for the first ten minutes of the second half as the Cougars maintained a 15 points lead at 56-41. Bethany was never able to get much closer and Cougars went on to win 89-66. Morris finished the game with 26 points off turnovers and 23 bench points.
RJ Dean also finished in double figures with 11 points. Roggenbuck also set a new career high, scoring 14 points on 7-9 shooting.
Grove will go for win #100 tomorrow when the Cougars meet up with Martin Luther at 5 p.m.
