Cougars Look to Continue Hot Shooting

MORRIS, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris Cougars (5-9, 3-0 UMAC) will host Northland (4-10, 0-3 UMAC) and St. Scholastica (5-9, 1-2 UMAC) this weekend on Jim Gremmels court. Morris is looking for the first 4-0 start to the UMAC season since the 2007-08 season. The best UMAC conference start for Minnesota Morris came in 2004-05 when UMM started with seven straight wins.

Paul Grove will be honored for his 100th UMAC victory prior to the game on Friday night.

Northland comes into the game looking for their first UMAC win of the season. They have won three of their last seven games of the season but have played some tougher competition in the UMAC. The Lumberjacks lost a tough two point game to St. Scholastica before falling to North Central and Northwestern, who sit at the top half of the UMAC.

Gerald Bates is Northland's top scorer, averaging 15.5 points per game in ten games this year. He has scored at least 15 points in his last six games, including a season high 29 against Crossroads. The Lumberjacks have lost four games by eight points or less this year.

Opponents have been able to shoot nearly 50% against Northland this season, which is similar to the Cougars. This could produce a high scoring affair on Friday night. The Cougars may try to get to the foul line on Friday against a team that is allowing 20 free throw attempts per game.

St. Scholastica will come to Morris after playing Crown on Friday night. The Saints have lost five of their last seven games coming into the weekend.  They are scoring 63.4 points per game this season, while giving up 62.7 points.

The Saints have an extremely balanced attack this year with 9 players scoring 6.3-9.6 points per game. They can shoot the three, averaging nearly six made three's per game. Similarly to the Cougars, they do their rebounding by committee. The Saints leading rebounder is averaging 4.2 boards per game.

Minnesota Morris has won four straight after ending the 2014 calendar year with eight straight losses. Morris is averaging 83.7 points per game in UMAC play this season and has shot 54.0% from the field. Neil Helgeson has averaged 19 points per game in conference play.

The Cougars have three players averaging in double figures led by RJ Dean, who has 11.9 points per game. John Haseman has emerged as a scoring threat as well, averaging 11.6 points per game during the last five games.
