MORRIS, Minn. – Northwestern (9-9, 5-2 UMAC) was able to outshot the Cougars (7-11, 5-2 UMAC) on Saturday, handing Minnesota Morris a 74-54 loss. The Eagles shot 50% from the field and 10-25 from three in the game. Morris struggled from distance converting on just three of 17 shots from behind the arc.
Minnesota Morris scored the game's first five points but the Eagles responded with 19-3 run to take an 11 point lead. The lead would get as large as 12 but UMM cut the lead to four at 25-21 after a pair of free throws from
CD Douglas. The Cougars could not get any closer and went to the break, down 29-25. Free throws kept Morris in the game after twenty minutes of play out scoring UNW 5-0 in that category.
The Cougars started the second half on a 6-0 run, four by
CD Douglas to take a 31-29 lead. Northwestern countered by scoring seven straight and grabbing the lead back. The Eagles' lead would grow to 12 with 7:33 left in the game. UMM tried to get back in the game, cutting the lead to six less than two minutes later but Northwestern would not give any ground. UNW went on a 15-3 run to put the game away, taking a 68-50 lead with just 2:19 left.
Douglas and
Neil Helgeson led the Cougars with 11 points.
Joe Roggenbuck added six points and five rebounds.
Cody Emrick had seven points off the bench. Northwestern outscored Morris 14-7 in second chance points, taking advantage of their ten offensive rebounds.
Through the first half of the UMAC schedule the Cougars sit in second place with a 5-2 record. They will be on the road for the next three games, starting on Tuesday as they take on Crown. Next weekend they play St. Scholastica on Friday and try to avenge a loss to Northland on Saturday.
