MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris volleyball and soccer are in action on Wednesday in crucial UMAC matches. Men's and women's soccer will host Bethany Lutheran starting at 1 p.m. Volleyball will head to Martin Luther for a match at 7 p.m.
Women's soccer clinched a spot in the UMAC Tournament with their win on Saturday and other results around the UMAC but Morris (6-6, 5-3 UMAC) should not be content with that. They have a chance to move up in the UMAC standings with a pair of wins this week. If the Cougars can win both matches this week they would jump to at least fourth in the conference. Morris could get as high as third in the conference if they can get some help from other teams. Bethany Lutheran (8-7-2, 5-2-1 UMAC) is just ahead of UMM in the standings. Earlier this year the Vikings beat Morris 1-0.
Men's soccer is currently in fifth and will also need some help to move up in the standings. Currently the Cougars (4-11, 4-4 UMAC) are behind Northwestern by .5 points and 2 points behind North Central. A win over North Central would help the Cougars lead frog the Rams in the standings. They could also pass Northwestern with a pair of wins combined with an Eagles loss to Wisconsin-Superior or Crown. Morris beat Bethany Lutheran (4-11-2, 3-4-1 UMAC) by a score of 6-0 earlier this season.
Volleyball sits atop the UMAC in a tie with Northwestern. They are both 4-0 in conference play with four matches left in the regular season. Martin Luther (4-23, 3-2 UMAC), the Cougars (16-10, 4-0 UMAC) opponent on Wednesday, is in fifth with a 3-2 conference record. If the Cougars can pick up two UMAC wins this week it will set up a very big match next Wednesday in St. Paul as the Cougars and Northwestern will battle in a match that could decide the top seed in the UMAC Tournament.
