MAYVILLE, N.D. – The Minnesota Morris Cougars (3-6) could not hold a nine point halftime lead and fell 80-75 to Mayville State on Friday night. The Comets outscored the Cougars 55-41 in a high scoring second half.
CD Douglas and
Tyler Ukkelberg combined for 40 points on the night.
Minnesota Morris led for almost the entire first half, the game was tied just once in the first 20 minutes. A three pointer from
Jeremy Halverson gave the Cougars a nine point lead at 34-25 before the end of the half. The Cougars were 7-19 from three in the first half while holding Mayville State to just 1-10 shooting from behind the arc.
The Cougars pushed their lead to 12 out of the halftime break but the Comets found their game and started a comeback. By the 15:22 mark the Cougars lead had dwindled to just two. The Comets took their first lead of the game with a three pointer at 45-44. The lead would grow to eight at 57-49 and Morris never fully recovered.
Morris is now off until January 2 when UMM hosts Wisconsin-Superior.
GAME NOTES:
Morris had 14 bench points in the first half but just four in the second half.
Mayville State picked up 17 points from their bench in the second half.
Douglas finished with 21 points and Ukkelberg finished with 19 points. Each finished with nine rebounds.
Three players for Mayville State finished with at least 20 points.
