MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (2-2) earned a tough 80-74 win over Mayville State (5-4) on Wednesday night.
CD Douglas led the way with 23 points, tying a career high. Douglas also added six assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Morris did a lot of damage in the paint scoring 42 points around the basket. Once again the bench was vital in the Cougars effort, scoring 25 points.
Anthony Fisher led the bench scoring with nine points.
Joe Roggenbuck had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Dylan Erickson was 8-8 from the line and finished the game with ten points.
The Cougars shot the ball well in the first half, making 13 of their 27 shots. Mayville State was held to 33.3% from the field but made five three pointers which kept them within just four at the break. Douglas gave the Cougars a 19-18 lead with just over six minutes to play and Mayville State was unable to find a way to take the lead back from Morris.
Out of the halftime break Morris saw their lead grow to seven before the Comets whittled it down to just two at 40-38. Minnesota Morris would not let the lead slip away and scored seven straight to increase the lead to nine. The lead would get as large as ten but the Comets shot back, shrinking their deficit to three at 53-50.
Another Cougars run, this time a 10-0 run looked like it might put the game away when Morris held a 67-55 advantage with under five minutes to play. Slowly Mayville state cut the lead to four with just under two to play. A three by the Comets cut the lead to two with 43 seconds remaining but
John Haseman responded with a bucket to make it a two possession game 18 seconds later. Morris would hang on for a six point victory.
Saturday the Cougars open up UMAC play against Crown at 3 p.m. in the P.E. Center.
