MORRIS, Minn. – A cold shooting first half cost the Cougars (2-2) in an 89-74 loss to Mayville State (5-4). The Cougars attempted 41 three point attempts in the game, the most since attempting 41 in 2003 in their final game as a member of the Northern Sun Conference against Northern State.
Minnesota Morris held an early lead and stuck with the Comets in a high scoring first quarter. Mayville State scored the final six points in the quarter to take a 23-20 lead.
Kendra Raths gave the Cougars a 24-23 lead with a three pointer early in the second quarter. The lead lasted about 90 seconds before the Comets went on a 19-7 run to end the half.
Unfortunately for Morris, the Comets continued to find a way to score the basketball. An 18-7 run in the middle of the third quarter extended the Comets lead to 23.
The Cougars were able to find some offense in the fourth quarter and outscored Mayville 28-20 in the final frame.
Four Cougars finished in double figures on the night. Freshmen
Elli Stevenson had 19 points and seven rebounds, leading the Cougars in both those categories on the night.
Mauren Thiesen had 12 points on four made threes.
Bailey Miller had a career high 11 points off the bench.
Tori Holt added ten points and six rebounds. Kayla Kramer had a team high six rebounds.
Morris will try to rebound in the UMAC opener against Crown on Saturday at 5 p.m.
