Cougars Look for Separation in the UMAC

MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (8-11, 6-2 UMAC) has a pair of big games this weekend as they look to improve their status in the UMAC. The Cougars take on St. Scholastica (9-10, 5-3 UMAC) and Northland (7-12, 3-5 UMAC) on the road. Northland handed the Cougars one of their two conference losses on the year.

Earlier this season Morris beat St. Scholastica 84-72 as they pulled away late.  Northland defeated the Cougars 66-63 in overtime coming up just short on a couple game winning chances. All UMAC teams are still in competition for a spot in the UMAC tournament with seven teams within four games of each other with six games to play. A pair of wins on the road this weekend would put the Cougars in a great spot for the final stretch of the season.

The Cougars are coming off a 101-69 victory over Crown on Tuesday night. The team shot 58.1% from the floor and made 12 three pointers in the victory. The defense also played a big role in the victory forcing 18 turnovers and turning them into 24 points. The UMM bench poured in 53 points, their highest total of the season.

The last time Morris and St. Scholastica met, the Cougars were able to get inside, scoring 42 points in paint. The bench also contributed, scoring 31 points.

Northland was able to slow UMM down in their first meeting of the season. The Lumberjacks held the Cougars to 42.6% from the floor in the game. In addition, the game featured just 15 free throws combined in a low scoring affair.
