MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (3-9, 1-1 UMAC) and Crown College (2-16, 1-1 UMAC) split their UMAC doubleheader on Monday, kicking off conference play. Morris won the first game 13-8 before falling 10-8 in the second game.
Kallie Grote and
Cassie Sowada led UMM in game one, each having three hits.
UMM struck for seven runs in the second inning to take a big lead. Grote started the scoring by driving in Sowada with a single down the left field line.
Gina Downie drove in
Paige Larson and Grote.
Autumn Mahoney then singled through the left side to score
Alex Anderson.
Meghan Pomeroy reached on an error which allowed Mahoney and Downie to score. Sowada then drove in Pomeroy to finish the scoring in the inning.
Crown got on the board in the third, scoring four runs to make it 7-4. Grote scored on a play in the bottom of the third putting UMM up by four. The fourth inning was another good one for the Cougars; they would score four runs to go up 12-4. Crown would avoid the run rule by scoring three times in the top of the fifth. Mahoney reached on an error in the fifth which allowed Larson to score. Crown got one more run in the game but it was not enough, as UMM won 13-8.
It was high scoring first inning in the second game of the day. Crown scored four times to go up 4-0 early. Morris tried to come back, scoring three times in the bottom of the first. Pomeroy and
Emily Leeb had RBI's in the inning.
The Storm would strike again in the third, this time scoring five runs to take a 9-3 lead. Morris tried to rally once more, scoring twice in the bottom of the inning. Pomeroy doubled, driving in Mahoney and Sowada singles to drive in Pomeroy. Crown got their tenth run of the game in the fourth inning putting them up 10-5 midway through the game.
In the bottom of the fourth Pomeroy drove in Anderson by drawing a walk with the bases loaded. Sowada would then drive in Downie with a sac fly. In the sixth inning Sowada had another RBI, this time driving Pomeroy in with a ground out. Unfortunately, the Cougars could not finish the comeback failing to score in the seventh inning and falling 10-8.
The Cougars will be back in action this weekend taking part in the UMAC crossover in West St. Paul.
