FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Minnesota Morris Cougars picked up a sweep to start their season, making it the first 2-0 start in over 15 years. Morris beat the Lakeland Muskies 7-3 and 4-1 in the seven inning doubleheader.
GAME 1 The Cougars struck in the top of the first, scoring a pair of runs on two hits and two walks.
Eric Terres drew a walk to begin the game and after a single by
Jake Schmitz, they executed a double steal putting runners on second and third.
Chandler Erickson had the season's first RBI after a groundout to short.
Kylan Hill followed it up with an RBI single.
In the top of the second UMM put together a rally to score four runs and go up 6-0 after two. Terres had a two run double to make it 4-0. Schmitz drove in Terres with a double of his own. Erickson added a sac fly to score Schmitz.
The Muskies scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the third to cut into the lead. Morris would get one of those runs back in the top of the sixth after a double from Erickson. Lakeland answered with a run in the bottom of the inning but
Devin Waldvogel came in in the seventh and closed the door.
Mitch Reller earned the win allowing just six hits and one earned run. The pocked up two strikeouts and allowed just two extra base hits.
GAME 2 Morris scored a couple runs in the bottom of the first inning, as Terres and Schmitz both scored again to start the game. They had back-to-back singles before coming home to score. Hill had an RBI double to drive in Schmitz.
Lakeland picked up a run in the top of the third without getting a hit. A walk and a throwing error would allow the runner to score. Michael Dokendorf kept LC without a hit through the first three innings as UMM held on to a slight one run lead.
Minnesota Morris picked up a couple unearned insurance runs. The inning started with back-to-back errors that allowed Terres and Schmitz to reach. Terres would score on the error that allowed Schmitz to reach. A two out double by
Donnie Mavencamp would drive home Schmitz to make it 4-1 in favor of the Cougars.
Dokendorf got the first two outs in the top of the sixth but allowed a single to break up his no-hit bid. The Muskies got another single but could not cut into the lead. Lakeland got another single in the seventh but again could not score and UMM picked up the win.
Morris will take on Illinois College tomorrow in another doubleheader starting at 9 a.m.
