MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (9-11, 8-2 UMAC) and Northwestern (5-20, 5-2 UMAC) split a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Cougar Field. The Cougars won game one 3-1 while Northwestern won game two 12-3.
GAME 1 It was a pitcher's duel in the first meeting of the day. The game went scoreless through five and half innings as the teams managed just four combined hits.
Mariah Essig allowed just four hits and one unearned run in the contest.
Minnesota Morris came to bat in the bottom of the sixth and
Gina Downie singled to third base to start the rally.
Autumn Mahoney sacrificed Downie to second, putting a runner in scoring position.
Molly Olson doubled to right center scoring Downie and giving Morris a one run lead.
Cassie Sowada was up next and she doubled down the line in left driving in Olson. After a ground out
Kallie Grote singled up the middle to score Sowada as UMM took a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning.
Northwestern would get a run in the top of the seventh thanks to a two out single. It would be all they could manage as UMM picked up the victory.
GAME 2 The Eagles would get off to a great start in game two, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first and four in the top of the second to take a 6-0 lead. Morris would get on the board in the bottom of the inning, cutting the UNW lead in half.
Mahoney started the rally with an RBI single to first driving in
Alex Anderson. Mahoney would then score on a ground out to make it 6-2.
Meghan Pomeroy drew a walk and then tried to steal second, which she did as
Molly Olson took advantage and scored on throw from the pitcher to the second baseman.
Unfortunately the Cougars would not score again but Northwestern did. They got one run in the top of the fourth and ten put the game away with a five run sixth inning.
The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they host North Central starting at 1 p.m.
