WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Cougars (10-15) earned a split with Maranatha Baptist (3-7) on Monday in a non-conference double header. The Sabercats won game one 4-3 before UMM fought back to win game two 5-4. Morris stole eight bases in the second game of the double header, tying a school record.
GAME 1
Minnesota Morris took the early lead scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first.
Jackson Gessell drove in
Jake Schmitz to open the scoring. Gessell would come in to score on a wild pitch. The Sabercats struck back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two run single, knotting the game at two.
Morris went back on top in the third when
Chandler Erickson scored from first on a sac bunt followed by a throwing error. The lead did not last long as again Maranatha Baptist responded. They tied the game on a sac fly to left field in the bottom half of the inning.
The game stayed tied at three until the bottom of the fifth when the Sabercats took a lead after a UMM throwing error. The Cougars were unable to comeback going down in order in the sixth and seventh inning.
GAME 2
The second game of the double header remained scoreless until the top of the third inning. The inning started with an error allowing
Evan Ellingworth to reach. He stole second and moved to third ahead of a walk drawn by
Devin Waldvogel. Waldvogel stole second putting runners on second and third with nobody out.
Ryan Wynn singled driving in Ellingworth giving UMM the lead.
Eric Terres flew out to left driving in Waldvogel.
Morris increased their lead to three when Gessell scored on a single by
Donnie Mavencamp. In the fifth the Cougars scored twice more. Schmitz drove in Terres with an RBI double and then stole third before scoring on a double by Mavencamp.
Maranatha started a comeback in the bottom of the fifth by scoring a pair of runs, pulling within three. Minnesota Morris held a three run lead as the seventh and final inning started. The Sabercats scored a run to get within two on a two out single. The rally was still alive when Waldvogel relieved starter
Joey Hyde, who left with the bases loaded. Waldvogel gave up a single which made it a one run ball game but he got the final batter of the game to fly out to left earning the save. He now has five saves on the year, tying the school record he set last season.
Jake Schmitz increased his hitting streak to nine games during the double header.
Tomorrow the Cougars will take on Hamline at the newly constructed CHS field in St. Paul. It will be just the third and fourth games at the new field, which was built for the St. Paul Saints. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
