NEW ULM, Minn. – The Cougars (12-20, 7-10 UMAC) stayed alive in their quest for a UMAC Tournament berth with a split against Martin Luther (8-22, 7-10 UMAC) on the road.
Michael Dockendorf pitched another gem to pick up his fourth win of the year. He allowed just one earned run in nine innings while scattering eight hits and UMM won 4-2. The Knights won the second game 10-3.
GAME 1
Evan Ellingworth gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the second inning by singling to left and got some help from the left fielder. On the play
Chandler Erickson scored from first thanks to an error. The Knights tied it up in the third with a single up the middle. The game would stay tied at one until the sixth.
Willie Fust drove in
Jackson Gessell with a fielder's choice to give UMM a 2-1 lead. Erickson then delivered a sac fly to left scoring
Donnie Mavencamp. Martin Luther cut the lead to one in the bottom of the inning but that would be as close as they got. Gessell gave UMM an insurance run in the seventh giving the Cougars a 4-2 lead. Dockendorf didn't need it as he finished off the complete game by allowing just one hit in the final three innings of play.
GAME 2
Morris also scored first in game two, scoring a run when Erickson drove in Mavencamp in the top of the second. Martin Luther tied the game in the bottom of the third and took a two run lead in fourth. The Knights would tack on another run in the fifth with a homer to left.
The Cougars could not get much going after the second inning, managing just three hits in the third through eighth inning. The game got out of hand in the bottom of the eighth when the Knights busted out for six runs on six hits. Morris scored a twice in the ninth but it was not enough as MLC won 10-3.
Tomorrow Morris will host Carleton College in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. The Cougars will return to Martin Luther on Tuesday afternoon to finish their season series.
