COLOGNE, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (8-12, 4-5 UMAC) found a way to comeback in each game on Wednesday, sweeping Crown (3-11, 3-3 UMAC) in a UMAC doubleheader.
Jackson Gessell had a homerun in each game, increasing his season total to three, the most since Ian Olson in 2011 for a Cougar player.
GAME 1
Crown scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Storm's lead did not last long as UMM rallied for a couple runs in the top of the second.
Evan Ellingworth singled home
Christian Korlath to tie the game. Ellingworth stole second and the throw went awry allowing
Chandler Erickson to score.
Morris would score four runs in the top of the fifth to take a five run lead. Terres singled to open the inning and scored on Schmitz double. Gessell reached on an error allowing Schmitz to score. After a fielder's choice Korlath singled giving Morris a pair of base runners. A wild pitch allowed runners to move to second and third with one out. Erickson flied out to center driving in Mavencamp. Next up Fust doubled to right center scoring Korlath. Crown would get a pair of runs back in the bottom of the inning pulling within three.
The Storm would continue to come back tying the game in the bottom of the eighth with a one out single. With the score tied at six heading to the ninth inning Morris had the top of their lineup due up.
Jake Schmitz reached on a one out error which brought Gessell to the plate. He put a ball over the right field wall putting UMM up 8-6, which is where the game ended.
GAME 2
It would be the Storm who took a big lead early in the second game. Crown scored six runs over the first two innings to go up 6-0. Fortunately for the Cougars, starter
Mitch Reller settled in and allowed just two hits over the next six innings as his offense started a comeback.
The Cougars scored a pair of runs in the top of the third cutting the Storm's lead to four. Schmitz had the lone RBI in the third inning. Morris would get another run in the top of the fifth when Terres drove in
Willie Fust.
The Minnesota Morris offense would explode in the sixth inning. The offense had 11 hits in the inning to score ten runs and take a 13-6 lead. The rally started with a solo homer to left center bringing UMM within one. Four straight singles followed including a two run single to left center by Ellingworth putting Morris in the lead. Schmitz also had a two run single in the inning, coming with the bases loaded and two outs. The Cougars scored five more runs with two outs thanks to a pair of doubles, a walk and two singles.
The game would end after the eighth inning thanks to the Cougars scoring five runs to go up 18-6. Three walks and two singles helped UMM push their lead to 12.
Minnesota Morris returns to the diamond on Friday when they meet up with Northland in Ashland, Wisconsin.
