NEW ULM, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (8-10, 6-1 UMAC) earned a sweep of Martin Luther (8-7, 3-4 UMAC) on Wednesday afternoon. The Cougars won 3-1 in game one and 9-3 in game two. Morris got three RBIs from
Molly Olson and
Gina Downie in the double header.
GAME 1 An unearned run provided the Cougars with a one run lead after the top of the first. Downie reached on an error and then scored on a one out sac fly from Olson. The second run for the Cougars also scored thanks to an error, as
Alex Anderson reached on a one out error and scored on a single by
Gina Downie.
Martin Luther would get on the board in the bottom of the third. The Knights scored their run on an error, cutting the Cougars lead to one.
In the top of the fifth the Cougars had five straight singles but could only score a run. The first two Cougars to reach via the single would be cut down on the base paths almost running UMM out of a rally. With nobody on and two outs Downie singles to restart the rally.
Autumn Mahoney followed with her own single and then Olson singled home Downie to give UMM back their two run lead.
Mariah Essig picked up the win for the Cougars going all seven innings, allowing just six hits and one run. It was the first win of the year for Essig and first since 2012, after taking the last two years off.
GAME 2 The second game of the day stayed scoreless through three innings of play. The Cougars would explode in the tip of the forth, taking control of the game. Morris scored eight runs on five hits and three MLC errors.
Cassie Sowada singled to start the inning and
Meghan Pomeroy followed it up with a single of her own.
Kallie Grote sacrificed them to second and third, putting a pair of runners in scoring position.
Clare Hamer drew a walk to load the bases.
Emily Leeb drove in Sowada and Pomeroy with a single, Hamer would also score on the play thanks to an error. Leeb got all the way to third on the play.
Alex Anderson reached on a fielder's choice putting a pair of runners on base once again. Downie reached on an error that allowed Leeb and Anderson to score. With runners on first and third Olson made it 6-0 with an RBI single to left, plating Downie. Sowada doubled to right center making it 8-0 for UMM as Olson and Mahoney scored.
The Knights would get three runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting back within five. The Cougars would get a run back in the top of the fifth when Downie drove in
Alex Anderson. The game would end there with UMM earning the 9-3 victory.
Mackenzie Weatherly earned her sixth win of the year going four innings and allowing three earned runs.
Erin Kvam pitched the final three innings of the game to earn her first save of her career.
