NEW ULM, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris Cougars (6-9, 3-5 UMAC) outshot Martin Luther (8-7, 5-3 UMAC) but fell 56-50 on Saturday evening.
Kendra Raths had a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds.
Tori Holt added nine points and six rebounds.
Morris was able to shoot well early, building up a 10-7 lead midway through the first quarter of play. The Knights would take their first lead of the game with a 5-0 run, taking a 12-10 lead. The first quarter of play ended with Martin Luther leading 14-13.
The Cougars led early in the second quarter but could not hold the lead. MLC went on a 7-0 run and took a 24-18 lead. By the end of the first half UMM would trail by a six point margin, 28-22. Morris outshot the Knights in the first half but Martin Luther took advantage of 15 offensive rebounds, scoring 11 second chance points.
The cold shooting for Martin Luther continued in the third quarter but Morris still trailed by three after four minutes of play. The Knights started the second half 0-9, but did not give up the lead. Late in the quarter MLC put together an 11-0 run to extend their lead to 14. Minnesota Morris would get a three from
Mauren Thiesen right before the end of the quarter and trailed 39-28 headed to the fourth quarter.
Martin Luther continued to stifle the Cougars offensively and led by nine with seven minutes to play. Three straight made free throws for UMM cut the Knights lead to six with just over six minutes left. Unfortunately, the Knights would secure a win with an 8-3 run, putting them up 11 with 3:30 on the clock. Morris made another late run, similar to Friday night, closing the deficit to four with 23 seconds left. It was too late and MLC put the nail in the coffin with a pair of free throws moments later.
The UMM defense held Martin Luther to just 25.8% shooting on the night. They also forced 19 turnovers and scored 20 points off those turnovers.
On Monday the Cougars return home for a game against Presentation at 7:30 p.m.
