MORRIS, Minn. – Five Cougars scored in double figures and the team had a season high with 22 assists in a 91-75 victory over St. Scholastica (8-5, 4-1 UMAC) on Sunday. Minnesota Morris (4-7, 2-3 UMAC) tied a season high with nine made three point field goals. The last time the Cougars had more assists was back in January of 2013.
The Cougars scored the first five points of the game forcing a very early timeout. Following the break St. Scholastica went on a 25-8 run, capped off by four straight made three pointers. Morris countered with a 12-3 run, cutting the Saints lead to just three, 28-25, with 3:37 left in the half. The Saints would hang on to the lead but led by just two at the half as
Noah Grove hit a three pointer as time expired.
The two teams traded buckets early in the second half but then UMM took off. Trailing 45-42, Morris outscored the Saints 25-5 over the next 6:13 of play to take a 67-50 lead. The Cougars would not give an inch the rest of the way, never allowing the Saints to get any closer than 13.
The game featured 59 points scored by bench players.
Tyler Ukkelberg had ten points, seven rebounds and a career high nine assists.
John Haseman led all Cougars with 16 points on 7-11 shooting.
CD Douglas had 15 points and eight rebounds. Grove finished with 14 points and
Joe Roggenbuck had ten points and eight rebounds.
Morris scored 46 of their 91 points in the paint on Sunday afternoon. In the second half Morris shot 22-33, 66.7%, to pull away from the Saints and complete their comeback. St. Scholastica only got to the free throw line five times all game as Morris committed just ten team fouls.
Minnesota Morris is back home next Friday and Saturday as they host Finlandia and Northland.
