WATERTOWN, Wis. - Minnesota Morris ended their 2016 football season by accomplishing a pair of firsts. After completing a perfect 5-0 home record last week, the Cougars picked up their first road win of the season Saturday with a non-conference victory at Maranatha Baptist 38-13. With the win, the Cougars clinched their first winning season since 2012.
Playing in his final collegiate game, quarterback
Donnie Mavencamp used his feet to score the Cougars' first two touchdowns. His 20-yard touchdown rush closed out a 6-play, 73-yard drive opening drive. In the second quarter, his 11-yard touchdown spurt gave the Cougars a 14-7 lead with 5:12 left in the half.
Minnesota Morris scored ten points in the final two minutes of the first half to take a 17-point lead into the break. Mavencamp used his arm to get the Cougars in the end zone again. His 10-yard connection to
Taylor Holleman extended the lead to 21-7 and
John Hoff's 27-yard field goal at the gun made the score 24-7 at halftime.
The Cougars extended their lead to 31 after three quarters scoring two more touchdowns on the ground. Senior
JC Cummings' 5-yard touchdown rush completed a 9-play, 76-yard drive with 3:21 left in the third. Less than three minutes later, fellow senior
Evan Guffey's 1-yard touchdown rush ended a 5-play, 52-yard drive to gave Minnesota Morris a 38-7 lead with 32 seconds left in the quarter.
Mavencamp went 18-for-34 for 229 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 44 yards and two scores. Cummings averaged over six yards a carry en route to 49 for the game. Senior
Kyle Petermeier caught seven balls for 80 yards. Guffey had five grabs for 79 yards.
Senior
Sergio Natividad made 12 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss. A week after collecting 3.5 sacks against Westminster, senior
Colin Everson recorded two more to go along with eight tackles. Senior
Chandler Erickson collected three of the team's five interceptions on Saturday.
Minnesota Morris wraps up the season at 6-4, the program's first winning season since the team finished 6-4 in 2012.
