Early in the season No. 1 Northland showed they came to play when they tied reigning champion St. Scholastica in the conference opener before turning around to knock off No. 3 Minnesota Morris 2-0 just four days later. The Cougars return to the championship game after missing last season. They hope to defeat a Northland team that has not lost to a UMAC team all season.

After needing overtime to defeat Bethany Lutheran to win the league championship, No. 1 Northland found itself in the same position to get to the postseason title game. Following 89:56 of dominance by the LumberJills, No. 5 Bethany Lutheran's leading scorer Rachel Bitter scored to send the game to overtime. Heather Jensen ended the game in overtime to send Northland on.

No. 3 Minnesota Morris mustered up just two total shots through the 110 minutes of play against No. 2 St. Scholastica who peppered the Cougar keeper who needed to make 24 saves to keep her squad in the game. After neither team could score in the 0-0, Yu Ito won it all for her Cougars scoring on the final kick of the shootout to win it 3-2.

Later, at 7 p.m., the No. 2 Cougar volleyball team travels to St. Paul to take on No. 1 Northwestern for the conference tournament championship.

It is becoming routine for No. 1 Northwestern and No. 2 Minnesota Morris to meet in the title game. The Cougars hope the outcome isn't routine as they have lost each of the last four title games in which they've faced the Eagles. This season, Northwestern defeated the Cougars in four sets at the conference preview tournament before knocking them off again in straight sets in the final week of the regular season.

Facing a Martin Luther squad that won in a five-set thriller Monday, the No. 1 eagles showed no signs of slowing down in quickly moving to a 3-0 win in the semifinal Wednesday. Star hitter Lindsey Peterson tallied 18 kills hitting .370 in the match while Freya Hansen added eight kills and 21 digs.

The No. 2 Cougars made quick work of the No. 3 Saints to cruise through the semifinal round Wednesday. Marissa Ekness tallied a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs to lead the Cougars. Layne Hermann set up the offense with 35 assists and Katie Reitsma had 24 digs.
