Minnesota Morris Fends Off Wisconsin Superior

MORRIS, Minn. - Minnesota Morris (13-13) held off a late rally from Wisconsin-Superior (12-14) to advance to the UMAC semifinals with an 83-80 win. CD Douglas had a career high 37 points on the nights, setting a new school record. Morris led by 20 points with 7:45 left but the Yellowjackets cut the lead to three late before a final shot at the buzzer missed and UMM escaped. The Cougars will be at St. Scholastica on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.

The win gave Paul Grove career win number, 181, one behind Perry Ford, who is the school's all-time leader in wins with 182. A win over the Saints on Wednesday would move Grove into a tie with Ford.

Wisconsin-Superior led the Cougars early; and held the lead for most of the first half. Morris would take their second lead of the game when Douglas hit a layup with two minutes left, putting UMM up 28-27. The lead would grow to six when Dylan Erickson hit a corner three as time expired.

The momentum carried over to the second half; Morris started the half on a 9-0 run. The Cougars made two of three foul shots before the half started, thanks to a couple technical fouls against Superior. The Yellowjackets appeared as if they would be unable to make a run at the Cougars, who were up 20 with less than eight minutes to play.

Superior still trailed by 19 with 4:50 left and by ten with one minute to play. That is when UWS made their run. Morris turned the ball over on two straight possessions and the lead was cut to four with 42 seconds left. After a made free throw the Yellowjackets hit a three, cutting the Cougars lead to just two.

Erickson seemed to put the game away when he made a free throw putting a Morris up five with 16 seconds left. Superior would hit a three just seconds later and after Morris hit one of two from the line Brian Lindblom's three came up just short.

Three other Cougars finished the game in double figures, including 15 points from Tyler Ukkelberg. John Haseman had 14 points and Erickson had ten points. The Cougars outscored Superior 38-24 in the paint. As a team Morris shot 48.2% from the field. At the foul line Morris was 24-32, in large part due to a 17-22 effort from Douglas.
