DULUTH, Minn. – In a battle for second place in the UMAC the Minnesota Morris Cougars (10-10, 7-5 UMAC) came out on the wrong end, losing 92-84 St. Scholastica (14-7, 9-3 UMAC) on Friday night. The Saints hit 14 three point field goals which helped them pick up the victory.
CD Douglas had 26 points on 11-16 shooting.
Joe Roggenbuck had 18 points, three shy of his season high.
St. Scholastica used a couple of long range shots to build up an early 16-9 lead and forced an early 30 second timeout. The Saints would hit four of their first five shots from behind the arc. Morris cut the lead to two at 19-17 but CSS recovered to score the next eight points in the ball game.
Morris did their best to stay in the game cutting the lead to four on a couple different occasions before the five minute mark of the first half. Unfortunately, the Cougars could not get over the hump and Scholastica took a 45-37 lead into the locker room.
The Saints began the second half where they left off. Joe Stark, who made five three pointers in the first half, tacked on two more as CSS' lead grew to 55-42 with 16:03 left. Scholastica continued to hit from three, connecting on their 13
th of the night and pushing the lead to 73-59 with about ten minutes to play.
Minnesota Morris would attempt comeback, going on a 9-1 run, cutting the deficit to six. However, the Cougars never fully completed the comeback and the Saints would hit their free throws down the stretch to complete a 92-84 win. Stark would finish with eight made three point field goals in the contest.
The Cougars held a 48-28 advantage in points in the paint on Friday but could not overcome the outside shooting of the Saints. Scholastica would finish the night with a 14-9 advantage in second chance points and a 19-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
Tomorrow night the Cougars will try to rebound against Wisconsin-Superior at 3 p.m.
