FORT MYERS, Fla. – Minnesota Morris (0-10) nearly earned their first win of 2016 but a bottom of the seventh homer went against the Cougars. In the first game of the day the University of Saint Joseph (5-2) held Morris in check, winning 7-0. UMass-Dartmouth (9-1) picked up a 5-4 win in game two.
Morris was held to just three hits in the game with the BlueJays.
Gina Downie had two hits and
Alex Anderson added the third. Saint Joseph led 1-0 after three innings but a five run fourth inning broke the game open. Madison Langrehr pitched two innings allowing just one run in relief.
Dartmouth took a big lead early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. A pair of doubles was a big part of the early offensive outburst for Dartmouth.
Lacey Sullivan put Morris on the board with a sac fly in the third.
Elli Stevenson drove in
Meghan Pomeroy with a bases-loaded one out in single in the sixth. Unfortunately Morris could not pick up any more runs in the inning.
The Cougars started the top of the seventh with three straight hits pulling them within a run.
Bret Hulett's double drove in
Gina Downie to make it 4-3. Pomeroy came to the plate and provided a sac but to tie the game. The game headed to the bottom of the inning with the score knotted at four. With one out the Corsairs' Marissa Spinuzzi ended the game with a homerun.
Downie had a great day on Wednesday with six hits in seven at-bats. Stevenson was impressive in the circle, going 4.1 innings and allowing one earned run.
