ROSEMOUNT, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (2-14) could not hold an eight run lead in the second game of a double header with Macalester (6-10) on Thursday and were swept in the two game set. The Scots won game one 12-0 in five innings. Macalester rallied for a 13-11 win in the second game.
Macalester started quickly, scoring two runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI double and RBI single with one out put the Scots on the board. In the bottom of the second three runs would cross for Macalester after two hits and two Cougar errors. Another run would cross in the bottom of the third inning after a two out bases loaded walk.
The Scots would put the game away with six runs on six hits in the fourth inning. A pair of two run singles was the back breaker in the inning.
Morris would come out swinging in the second game scoring five runs in the bottom of the first.
Magen Knickerbocker got the scoring started with a one out single to right field. Back-to-back bases loaded singles by
Erin Kvam and
Elli Stevenson made it 3-0 UMM.
Clare Hamer had the big hit in the inning, delivering a two run double to make it 5-0.
The Cougars continued to score in the second inning picking up three more runs. Knickerbocker started the scoring once again, this time driving in a pair with bases loaded single up the middle. Kvam would make it 8-0 with a sac fly to right, driving in
Lacey Sullivan.
Macalester started their rally in the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits and an error. Three straight RBI singles helped the Scots get back in the contest. Three runs would score in the top of the fourth to tie the game at eight. A two out fielding error would give the Scots their first lead of the game in the top of inning number five.
The Cougars threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth but left a runner on second base. The Scots appeared to end all hopes of the Cougars earning a split as they would tack on four runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Minnesota Morris had other ideas and loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning in an attempt to rally.
Alex Anderson had a RBI fielder's choice and an error on the play allowed Morris to cut their deficit to three. Another error would allow Anderson to score and Morris trailed by just two. Unfortunately the rally came up short as Morris struck out to end the threat and game.
Autumn Mahoney had four hits in seven at-bats. Knickerbocker had three RBI's in four at-bats. Sullivan finished with three hits and two runs scored in six at-bats.
