MANKATO, Minn. – After a tough 12 inning loss in game one, Minnesota Morris (10-18, 3-5 UMAC) earned a 14-1 win in the second game to earn split with Bethany Lutheran (5-17, 3-7 UMAC) on Saturday. A 12
th inning single gave the Vikings the win game one. Morris would score 12 runs in the fifth and sixth innings in game two to earn the run-rule victory.
Bethany scored quickly in game one but UMM would respond just as fast, tying the game in the top of the second. Morris tacked on a run in the third when
Willie Fust drove in
Bryce Jergenson.
Chandler Erickson made it 3-1 in the fourth with an RBI single, driving in
Ryan Wynn. A two run double in the bottom of the fifth tied the game at three.
The Vikings threatened to take a lead in the seventh but the inning ended with a ground out to first. In the top of the eighth Morris put a runner on second with one out but could not drive him in. Bethany did the same thing in the bottom of the inning. In the tenth inning the Vikings once again stranded a runner at second. Morris nearly scored in the 11
th inning but Wynn was thrown out trying to take home with Gessell at the plate. The game ended with a one out single up the middle in the bottom of the twelfth.
Sam Melchoir pitched a great game for UMM, throwing eight innings and allowing just three runs.
Game two stayed scoreless through the first four innings but the UMM bats came alive in the fifth inning. The scoring was started with an RBI single off Erickson's bat, driving in
Trent Johnson. Jergenson would keep the inning going with a two run single. The final run scored on a sac fly from Gessell.
The game broke open in the sixth as eight Cougars touched home. Erickson and Fust each had two run hits in the barrage. After the Vikings got on the board in the bottom of the inning Morris salted the game away with two runs in the top of the seventh.
Erickson finished game two with three hits and four runs driven in. Gessell had three runs driven in.
Michael Dockendorf went all seven innings to earn the win, scattering seven hits and allowing one run. He finished the game with six strikeouts.
