Cougars Break Records in Sweep

MORRIS, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris (8-22, 6-4 UMAC) softball team won their sixth straight game, doing so in historic fashion. The Cougars scored 59 runs in the two game sweep of North Central (1-19, 0-10 UMAC) on Saturday. Morris tied the school record with a 23-1 win in game own before breaking the record for runs scored in a 36-5 win in game two.

After a scoreless first inning Morris exploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the second inning. Elli Stevenson started the scoring by drawing a walk and stealing second, third and home. Meghan Pomeroy and Erin Kvam each had two run singles in the inning. In the third inning Morris scored eight more runs as five different Cougars drove in a run.

Every Cougar starter had a hit in the first game, led by Paige Larson's four hits. Larson drove in a team high four and scored four times as well. Bret Hulett just missed the cycle after picking up a single, double and triple on the afternoon. Autumn Mahoney, Hulett and Kvam each drove in three runs.

Larson would get her cycle in the second game, getting a single, double, triple and homerun while scoring five times and driving in four. Her homerun was one of two inside the park homers for the Cougars. Autumn Mahoney had the other inside the park homer for UMM.

North Central scored first to go up 2-0 but Morris scored eight runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Maegan Anderson, Emily Nordquist, Alex Anderson and Mahoney had two run hits in the inning. Five Cougars scored in the third as four different batters drove in a run.

In the fourth inning the Cougars exploded for 23 runs in half inning. The 23 runs are tied for the second most in NCAA Division III softball history. The record is 26, set in 2009, by Beloit.

Minnesota Morris drove in 32 runs in the game, tied for seventh most in NCAA history. The 31 hits are tied for 11th all-time in NCAA Division III history. UMM finished with 51 total bases, tied for eighth in Division III history.
