Cougars Clinch Playoff Berth Despite Sweep

MORRIS, Minn. – Despite dropping both games to Wisconsin-Superior (22-10, 11-3 UMAC) the Minnesota Morris Cougars (8-26, 6-8 UMAC) are heading to the UMAC Tournament as the fifth seed. Their opponent for the 4/5 game will be determined later this weekend but it will be a road game for the Cougars.

In the first game of the afternoon, the Yellowjackets scored eight runs from the third inning on to win 10-2. Morris did strike first, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Gina Downie scored the first run after a walk of Autumn Mahoney. Magen Knickerbocker drove Mahoney in with a single through the left side. The lead was quickly erased in the bottom of the inning as a one out, two run double tied the score.

Wisconsin-Superior took a two run lead in the third with a pair of runs. Three more Yellowjackets crossed the plate in the fourth, giving UWS a five run lead. Morris never recovered and fell by eight.

Superior struck first in game two, scoring two runs in the first on a homerun to center. In the second a wild pitch allowed the Yellowjackets to take a 3-0 lead. Minnesota Morris got on the board after Downie doubled in Alex Anderson.

The score would remain 3-1 until Wisconsin-Superior put the game out of reach with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Alex Anderson led the team with two hits in the second game of the day.

Minnesota Morris will wrap up the regular season on Sunday with a pair of games vs Northland College starting at 1 p.m.
