MORRIS, Minn. – On Senior Day, Minnesota Morris (10-26, 8-8 UMAC) ended the regular season in style, sweeping Northland (4-30, 3-13 UMAC) by scores of 10-2 and 12-1. Morris combined for 27 hits on the day. Senior
Kallie Grote was 2-3 with three RBI's in the second game of the day.
The Cougars would put up a crooked number in the second inning, scoring five runs on five hits. Morris would score the first three runs without the ball leaving the infield.
Lacey Sullivan drove in
Gina Downie with a double to left putting UMM up 4-0.
Bret Hulett followed that up with an RBI single to right field.
Autumn Mahoney picked up an RBI with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the third. The Lumberjills got two runs back in the fourth inning but Morris quickly responded. Three Cougars touched home in the fourth, scoring on back-to-back fielder's choices of the bats for Grote and
Paige Larson. The game would end in the fifth when Grote singled home
Maegan Anderson, putting Morris up 10-2.
Northland got on the scoreboard first in the second game, doing so in the first inning with a sac fly. Morris answered back scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Elli Stevenson doubled allowing Downie to score and tie the game. Mahoney put UMM on top after a wild pitch. The final run of the inning scored on a bunt single from
Magen Knickerbocker.
After a scoreless second inning the Cougars scored four times in the bottom of the third. An error allowed the first run to score but then with two outs Grote and Larson each had RBI singles, increasing the lead to 7-1. The hits surrounded
Meghan Pomeroy scoring on a throw to second trying to catch Grote stealing.
Minnesota Morris put the game out of reach in the fourth inning scoring five runs on four hits. Pomeroy and Grote had back-to-back two run hits to put UMM up double digits. The final run of the game scored on a RBI single by
Paige Dahlberg, the first of her Morris career.
On Tuesday the Cougars will travel to Crown to take on the Storm in the UMAC Tournament at 3:30 p.m. The winner will move on to Duluth to compete in the four team, double elimination tournament May 5-7.
