Cougars Beaten by Beavers

STORM LAKE, Iowa – After dropping a tough game one loss, 6-5 in eight innings the Cougars fell 9-0 in the second game of a doubleheader with the Buena Vista Beavers (13-10). Minnesota Morris (2-20) was led by Elli Stevenson who had three hits on the day.

Both teams threatened to score in the first two innings of the game but could not get a run across the plate. Morris put a two-out rally together but could not get run in from second in the top of the third. IN the bottom half of the inning Buena Vista converted on their two-out rally, scoring two runs.

After a scoreless fourth inning Minnesota Morris exploded for five runs on six hits to take a 5-2 lead. The first run scored via an error. Autumn Mahoney tied the game with an RBI single to left field scoring Stevenson. Lacey Sullivan then doubled to left center driving in Mahoney and Gina Downie. The final run of the inning scored when Clare Hamer singled home Sullivan. The Beavers would grab a run in the bottom of the inning, getting back within two.

Morris could not get anything going in the final two innings but went to the bottom of the seventh with a two run lead. A fielding error allowed the Beavers to get within one with nobody out. A sac fly followed, tying up the game at five. In the extra frame an RBI single to left field allowed the runner from second to score.

In the second game of the day Morris was held to just three hits in five innings of play. Buena Vista scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead. Two more runs scored in third inning to make it 3-0. The big inning came in the fifth when six runs crossed the plate for the Beavers.

Minnesota Morris is back in action on Saturday when they host Wisconsin-Superior at 3 p.m. The double header was originally scheduled in Superior but field conditions will not allow that to occur. The YellowJackets will remain the home team in both games.
