ST. PETER, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (13-21) held the Gustavus (15-18) offense to just seven runs in Sunday's doubleheader but the offense could not carry over the momentum from yesterday. The Gusties would win game one 4-0 and then completed the sweep with a 3-0 win in game two.
Gustavus scored three times in the second inning in game one, all unearned. Morris tried to get a run back in the third, putting a runner on second with one out but could not get him home. The Cougars would do the same thing in top of the fourth. The Gusties picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the inning. They would not need the run as the Cougars failed to get a hit in the final three innings of play.
Mitch Reller had his second best outing of the year, going four innings and allowing just on earned run.
Tyler Hannan pitched two innings in relief and allowed just one hit.
In the second game Gustavus took a lead in the bottom of the first, scoring on a double play. Morris had a runner in scoring position in the third inning but could not tie the score, stranding the runner on third. The Gusties would make it 3-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning.
The Cougars had their best chance of the day to score in the fifth as the first two batters of the inning reached base. Unfortunately the runners would get stranded on second and third. Morris put a runner on base in the sixth and seventh innings as well but could not get on the board, falling 3-0.
Todd Woefel,
Samuel Palmatier,
Noah Grove and
Joey Hyde combined to throw six innings, allowing eight hits and one earned run.
