DULUTH, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (12-27) kept their season alive with a 4-2 victory over Northwestern (20-22) in the first elimination game of the 2016 UMAC Tournament. The Cougars used a three run, third inning to grab a lead and never let go.
A one out bases loaded walk in the bottom of the first put Northwestern up 1-0 over Morris. Things could have got worse but an infield fly and fielder's choice followed and the Cougars worked out of the jam.
After a scoreless second inning
Alex Anderson stole home in the top of third to tie the game.
Lacey Sullivan doubled to left field driving in
Autumn Mahoney to give Morris a lead. The third run of the inning came home via an error by the third baseman.
Anderson was involved in the Cougars run in the fourth as well. She laid down a sac bunt and on the play a throwing error allowed
Elli Stevenson to score.
The Eagles got a run back in the fifth but stranded three runners on base. Morris would carry a two run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Northwestern put runners on first and second with just one out. The runners would advance to second and third after a ground out to second base. With a 2-2 count
Erin Kvam was able to pick up the complete game victory, by inducing another ground out to second base.
Minnesota Morris will now play St. Scholastica at 12 p.m. tomorrow. The game was originally scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday but was moved due to a nearly three hour weather delay in the game between St. Scholastica and Wisconsin-Superior.
