MORRIS, Minn. - It was a tale of two halves for the Minnesota Morris men's basketball team Monday at Jim Gremmels Court. The Cougars shot over 56 percent in the first half and led Mayville State 38-37. In the second 20 minutes, the Cougars shot just 20 percent and scored only 13 points and fell to the Comets for the second time this season, 65-51.
One Cougar whose shots were falling Monday was
Tyler Ukkelberg. He went 7-for-9 from the floor, including 6-for-8 from 3-point range on his way to 20 points. No other Cougar reached double figures.
After Mayville scored the game's first six points, Ukkelberg got Minnesota Morris on the board with a 3 from the top of the key and that started a 7-0 run. The Halverson brothers scored the next nine points for the Cougars (six from Jeffrey and three from Jeremy) and UMM led 12-11. Ukkelberg followed with eight straight points to put the Cougars up 20-13.
The Comets followed with a 12-2 run to take a 26-22 edge. Later, a
Jeremy Halverson 3 trimmed the deficit to 1 then another Ukkelberg 3 regained the lead for the Cougars at 32-31. An
Anthony Fisher 3 in the final seconds gave the Cougars a one-point lead going into the break.
Mayville State's Daniel Lindgren scored the first points of the second half on a 3 to give the Comets a 40-38 lead and they would not trail again the rest of the way. They outscored the Cougars 28-13 in the second half.
Minnesota Morris (9-9) is on the road for the next three weekends and five games beginning with a Friday tilt at Martin Luther.
