Cougars roll over Knights in New Ulm

NEW ULM, Minn. - Minnesota Morris snapped a four-game conference losing streak in a big way with a 94-61 win Friday night at Martin Luther in UMAC men's basketball action.

Junior guard Tyler Ukkelberg has had the hot hand of late for the Cougars and he continued his great play early on as he scored nine of the team's first 14 points as Minnesota Morris jumped out to a 14-5 advantage. Jeremy Halverson gave the Cougars their first double-digit lead with back-to-back 3s that gave UMM a 20-10 lead 8:32 into the contest. The Cougars extended their edge to 13 at 43-30 by halftime.

Minnesota Morris held the 13-point lead despite shooting only 36 percent from the floor. That shooting percentage rose to 63 percent in the second half as the Cougars outscored the Knights 51-31 to gain their 33-point victory. Defensively, the Cougars held Martin Luther to 36 percent in both halves.

The Cougars lead consistenly stayed in the teens throughout the first seven minutes of the second half. An Ukkelberg shot from distance gave the Cougars their first 20+ lead at 63-41 with 12:31 left in the game. The lead would not get below 20 the rest of the way and would get to as high as 36 late in the contest.

Ukkelberg was 9-of-14 from the floor on his way to a game-high 24 points. Noah Grove was next in line with 18 points. CD Douglas added 13 and Halverson scored 11. Anthony Fisher grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with eight points. The Cougars held a 51-35 edge on the boards.

Minnesota Morris (10-9, 5-5 in UMAC) travels east to Mankato for a matchup Saturday at Bethany Lutheran at 5 p.m.
