MORRIS, Minn. - Jim Gremmels Court has been very nice to the Minnesota Morris women's basketball team. The 66-57 win over Mayville State Monday night gave the Cougars their third home victory in four days and, after losing their first home contest of the season, the Cougars have rattled off ten straight victories in front of the home fans.
If the Cougars were going to win their tenth straight home game, it was going to take a comeback effort. They trailed by five after the first quarter and then outscored the Comets in each of the next three quarters to come away with the nine-point victory.
Minnesota Morris fell further behind after spotting Mayville the first four points of the second quarter and trailed 19-10. Later down 28-21,
Elli Stevenson got the Cougars on the right track with a deep 3. A pair of
Abby Van Kempen lay-ins cut the deficit to 2 at 30-28. A
Jordan Halvorson jumper tied the game at 32 and a pair of
Mauren Thiesen free throws in the closing seconds of the quarter gave Minnesota Morris a 34-32 halftime edge.
The Cougars came out firing on all cylinders in the third. Four different Minnesota Morris players scored as the Cougars tallied the first eight points of the frame to take a 42-32 lead. The Comets closed the quarter on a 16-9 run though to make it 53-50 Cougars going into the fourth.
Minnesota Morris pumped up the defensive pressure and held Mayville to just seven fourth quarter points and sustained their lead the rest of the way.
Kendra Raths picked up her fifth straight double-double with a 10-point, 10-rebound effort.
Mauren Thiesen led all scorers with 17 points.
Tori Holt added 13 points and Stevenson tallied 11.
Minnesota Morris (13-5) begins a five-game road stretch Friday at Martin Luther.
