MORRIS, Minn. - Minnesota Morris scored a season-high 11 runs in both games of a doubleheader Saturday and were able to take two of three in the two-day series from Maranatha Baptist in non-conference baseball action at the Cougar Diamond.
In the opener Saturday, the Cougars raced out to an 8-0 lead after scoring six in the first and two in the second. In the first,
Evan Ellingworth delivered the first big base hit of the game with a 2-RBI double.
Connor Spindler and
Chandler Erickson later had run-producing singles.
Spindler and Zack Kuefler each had RBI singles in the second to add to the Cougar advantage.
Starting pitcher
Joey Hyde held Maranatha scoreless through three of his first four innings of work before being pulled in the fifth. He struck out five in 4.2 innings of work.
The Cougars added two more in the third.
Jackson Gessell brought home Erickson with an RBI single. Two batters later, he scored UMM's 10th run on a triple off the bat of
Donnie Mavencamp.
The Sabercats rallied to pull within 11-8 in the sixth.
Tyler Hannan came on to get the final out in the sixth then held MBU off the scoreboard in the seventh to record his second save of the season in the 11-8 win.
In the second game of the day, the Cougars appeared to be on their way to gaining a series sweep, but Maranatha staged a late-game comeback to take the finale 12-11.
The big Cougar inning came in the sixth when they plated six runs. The big shot of the frame came off the bat of
Thomas Eckstein as he belted a 3-run home run down the left field line.
Minnesota Morris (5-11) is back on the home field Tuesday when they host Concordia-Moorhead at 2:30 p.m.
