ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. - Minnesota Morris was looking to win their first conference games of the season Tuesday, but it was Crown who would stay undefeated in UMAC play as the Storm took two from the Cougars in softball action.
The Cougars outhit the Storm in the first game 10-7, but fell in the contest 7-4.
Lacey Sullivan went 4-for-4 in the game and delivered UMM's first RBI of the game. After
Becca Holland scored on an error, Sullivan's single to right plated
Autumn Mahoney. Sullivan later scored on an error as the Cougars would trail 4-3 after three innings.
In the fifth, Sullivan hit a one-out double to center. Two batters later,
Megan Knickerbocker drove her in with a double to right. That cut the deficit to 5-4. Crown would add two insurance runs in the sixth to take the opener by 3.
Bret Hulett went 3-for-4 and
Michelle O'Rourke had a pair of hits, including a triple.
In the nightcap, Minnesota Morris got out to a 5-0 lead in the third, but were not able to hang on and eventually lost 7-6 in 10 innings.
The Cougars scored three times in the second. The first three batters of the frame all walked.
Kallie Wycoff brought in two with a double down the left field line and an RBI groundout plated the third.
In the third, Knickerbocker's double to left scored
Bret Hulett from first then
Elli Stevenson's triple to left scored Knickerbocker.
Crown began chipping away at the Cougar lead by scoring once in the third and twice in the fourth. The Cougars added a run in the sixth to make it 6-3 going into the seventh. With the bases loaded and Crown down to their last strike, Cassidy Valenzuela ripped a double to left center to clear the bases and send the game to extra innings.
After scoreless eighth and ninth innings, Crown scored the winning run in the tenth to sweep the doubleheader.
Minnesota Morris (4-22, 0-6 in UMAC) returns home to face Bethany Lutheran for a UMAC doubleheader Thursday at 1 p.m.
