Cougars lose road contest to Johnnies

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Minnesota Morris outhit the two-time defending MIAC playoff champion Johnnies of Saint John's 13-10, but SJU was able to plate more runs and downed the Cougars 6-3 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday.

Four Cougars had at least two hits Wednesday, including Evan Ellingworth who went 4-for-4 with an RBI and raised his season batting average to .378. Chandler Erickson, Connor Spindler, and Jackson Gessell all went 2-for-5.

After allowing single runs in the first and second innings, Minnesota Morris scored a pair in the third to tie it up. With one out, Spindler got on with an infield single. Gessell moved him up a base with a single up the middle. Ellingworth's single to center scored Spindler then Donnie Mavencamp's jam shot down the right field line plated Gessell.

Saint John's regained the lead in their half of the third, but the Cougars equalized the game again in the fourth. Zack Kuefler hit a one-out double to left. Two batters later, Erickson reached on an error that moved Kuefler to third then Spindler followed with an infield single to score Kuefler and tie the game at 3.

The Johnnies scored three times in the sixth to take the lead and they held the Cougars off the scoreboard for the final five innings.

Joey Hyde pitched five solid innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out three.

Minnesota Morris (6-16) returns home to face UW-Superior Saturday for a UMAC doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.
