MORRIS, Minn. - Minnesota Morris collected their first conference win of the season in gaining a 9-7 victory over Martin Luther Friday in a UMAC softball doubleheader at the Cougar Softball Park.
The Cougars knocked out 16 hits in the second game to earn the two-run victory. After two scoreless innings, UMM put up a crooked number in the third to take a 4-0 lead as 10 batters came to the plate. With the bases loaded,
Lacey Sullivan drove in the first two runs with a single to center.
Bret Hulett plated two more on the next pitch as her single to center scored
Autumn Mahoney and Sullivan.
Minnesota Morris loaded the bases again in the fourth before
Kallie Wycoff's single to center scored
Gina Downie to make it 5-0.
The Cougars scored two in the fifth and two more key insurance runs in the sixth to make the score, 9-3. Hulett doubled to lead off the sixth and that was followed by a
Kallie Wycoff double that scored Hulett. Wycoff would later score off a double steal.
Martin Luther rallied to make it 9-7 in the seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs.
Elli Stevenson came on and got the final batter to pop up to second to record the save.
Mahoney and Wycoff each went 3-for-4 and Sullivan, Hulett, and
Meghan Pomeroy each collected two hits with Sullivan driving three.
Martin Luther topped the Cougars in the opener, 9-4.
Minnesota Morris (6-26, 1-9 in UMAC) is back on the diamond tomorrow at North Central.
