Cougars belt out 27 hits in doubleheader sweep of Rams

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - After earning their first conference win of the season Friday, Minnesota Morris added two more UMAC victories Saturday in a doubleheader sweep of North Central.

Both of the Cougars victories ended early. The first game ended with a 10-1 triumph in five innings and the second game was decided by a 13-5 score in six innings.

The Cougars jumped on the Rams early in the opener with seven first-inning runs. Gina Downie started on the onslaught with a single to left. Autumn Mahoney followed with a double to left. Lacey Sullivan drove in Downie with a single to right. Kallie Wycoff's RBI single to center scored Mahoney. Sullivan stole home to score the team's third run. Two batters later, Emily Nordquist brought in Wycoff and Meghan Pomeroy with a double to center. Later, Downie collected her second hit of the inning with a double to center that scored two to make it 7-0.

UMM added a run in the second and two more in third to go up 10-0 after three inings.

Madison Langrehr kept North Central off the scoreboard until the fifth and earned the victory allowing six hits and striking out four.

In the second game, both teams crossed the plate twice in the first inning. The Cougars added four in the second to take command of the game. Mahoney had the frame's big hit as her single drove in three runs to break the tie. Pomeroy later tripled to score Sullivan and give UMM a 6-2 lead.

After scoring single runs in the third and fourth, the Cougars added five in the sixth to take a 13-2 edge. Marissa Kroells helped add on the lead with a 2-RBI triple to center.

Bret Hulett got the win in the circle as she struck out 11 in six innings of work.

Minnesota (8-26, 3-9 in UMAC) returns to Morris for their home finales Tuesday against Northwestern at 3:30 p.m.
