DULUTH, Minn. - In the second game of a doubleheader, Minnesota Morris' late rally came up a bit short as the game-tying run got tagged out at home in the Cougars 4-3 loss to St. .Scholastica. The Saints won the opener to earn the doubleheader sweep.
The Cougars fell behind 3-0 after two innings before staging their comeback in the fifth.
Michelle O'Rourke hit a one-out single to left to advance
Meghan Pomeroy to second.
Kallie Wycoff followed with a double to left center to plate both Pomeroy and O'Rourke to cut the deficit to 3-2.
St. Scholastica got a much-needed insurance run in the sixth to go up 4-2 going into the seventh.
With one out, both Pomeroy and O'Rourke worked the count full before drawing walks. Both moved into scoring position on a passed ball.
Elli Stevenson would single to left to score Pomeroy, but O'Rourke would get thrown out at home trying to score the tying run. With Stevenson on second, a pop up to short ended the rally and the game.
CSS shutout the Cougars in the first game, 8-0.
Minnesota Morris (4-20, 0-4 in UMAC) is back on the road Tuesday for a conference doubleheader at Crown.
