ASHLAND, Wis. - The Minnesota Morris baseball team closed out the regular season Saturday with a split at Northland. The UMAC postseason tournament is on deck for the Cougars next Thursday-Saturday in Duluth and they will be either the No. 2 or 3 seed after finishing with a program best 12 UMAC wins.
In the opener, after two scoreless innings, the Cougars put up a crooked number in the third to take the game's first lead. UMM achieved their first run on a Northland throwing error.
Connor Spindler singled home the second run and he later scored on another error to make it 3-0.
The Lumberjacks scored twice in the fourth and once in the seventh to knot the game at 3.
Minnesota Morris scored three times in the ninth to regain the advantage.
Donnie Mavencamp doubled to lead off the frame and later advanced to third. A
Lucas Luedtke double scored Mavencamp to put the Cougars up 4-3. Two batter later,
Trent Johnson's RBI single plated Luedtke and that was followed by a
Chandler Erickson double to score Luedtke to make it 6-3.
Luedtke came on to pitch in the eighth and held Northland scoreless over the final two innings to record the win. Erickson, Mavencamp, and Johnson each collected two hits in the 6-3 win.
Northland topped the Cougars 5-2 in the nightcap.
Minnesota Morris finishes the regular season with an 18-18 overall record and 12-4 mark in the UMAC.
