NEW ULM, Minn. - Minnesota Morris held Martin Luther to just 12 second half points in earning a 65-49 win Wednesday night in UMAC women's basketball action in New Ulm.
The Cougars trailed by 2 at the half, 37-35, as Martin Luther connected on 41 percent of their shots. In the second half, UMM held the Knights to just 11 percent shooting. They were 4-for-36 from the floor and 1-for-11 from 3-point range.
Using their defense as a catalyst, the Cougars outscored the Knights, 17-5, in the third quarter. Layups from
Mauren Thiesen and
Abby Van Kempen gave the Cougars the lead to start the frame. Back-to-back lay-ins from
Elli Stevenson gave UMM a 47-40 lead. A
Bailey Miller lay-in helped give the Cougars a 52-42 edge going into the fourth.
UMM kept up the pressure in the fourth quarter and maintained a healthy lead throughout on their way to the 16-point win.
Kendra Raths recorded her second double-double in the last three games with a 16-point, 12-rebound effort. Stevenson added 13 points and eight rebounds. Miller and Thiesen scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Minnesota Morris (4-10, 4-2 in UMAC) next hosts Northland Saturday at 5 p.m. at Jim Gremmels Court.
