Cougars go on road for five-set victory

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota Morris volleyball team's hectic travel schedule continued Monday with a non-conference match at Concordia-Moorhead. The Cougars went the distance to pull out a five-set (20-25, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 15-12) victory over the Cobbers.

The Cougars dropped the first and fell behind 16-11 in the second before staging a rally to even the match. They went on an 8-1 run to take a 19-17 lead. After Concordia tied it at 20, kills from Rachel Mathias and Morgan Miller regained a 22-20 edge for UMM. Brenna Tinjum closed out the set with a kill.

UMM fell behind again in a back-and-forth third set. The Cougars trailed 12-10 before rattling off six straight to take a 16-12 lead. Layne Herrmann delivered a service ace and Whitney Schwartz smashed two kills in the run. Concordia would later take a 19-18 advantage. UMM countered with a 5-1 run to gain control. A Herrmann kill gave the Cougars a 2 sets to 1 lead.

Concordia took the fourth set to force a deciding fifth set. Concordia took a 5-4 lead before a 4-0 Cougar run gave them an 8-5 edge. A Tori Everson kill extended the lead to 12-8. Tinjum closed out the set and the match with a kill.

Miller led the Cougars with 13 kills. Tinjum delivered 12 and Mathias added 11. Herrmann totaled 47 assists and 12 digs. Everson dug out 17 balls while Alyssa Ukestad had 15.
