MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -
CD Douglas poured in 34 points as Minnesota Morris clinched a UMAC postseason tournament berth with a 96-87 win Saturday over North Central in men's basketball action in Minneapolis.
The Cougars started off slow and trailed by double digits only six minutes into the contest. Douglas quickly cut the deficit in half with a layup and 3 to make to 20-15. Later an 8-0 run tied the contest at 26 following 3s from
Jeffrey Halverson and
Trey Heinsuis. The Cougars added another 11-0 run shortly thereafter to take a 37-28 lead with 3:19 remaining in the first half. They would take a 43-36 lead into the break.
North Central started out hot again to start the second half as they pulled within 2 at 49-47 three minutes in. Later, an NCU 3-point play equaled the score at 55. The Rams would take a 58-57 lead on a Jack Martin jumper. A
Nick Peterson jumper regained the lead for the Cougars and a
Noah Grove 3-point play extended the edge to 4 at 62-58. NCU battled back again and took a 72-71 lead with 5:54 remaining. UMM followed with a 9-0 run, started by five straight points from
Jeffrey Halverson, that gave the Cougars an 80-72 lead with 4:05 left. The Cougars would retain at least a two-possession the rest of the way.
Douglas was 11-for-20 from the floor and 11-for-12 from the free throw line on his way to his 34 points. Grove scored 22 on 8-for-14 shooting. Heinsuis added 14 and
Jeffrey Halverson had a near double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Minnesota Morris (11-12, 9-5 in UMAC) returns home for senior night, Wednesday against Northwestern at 5:30 p.m.
