MORRIS, Minn. - Minnesota Morris held a halftime lead in their home finale, but were unable to hold on as the Cougars fell to Northwestern, 75-66, Wednesday night in UMAC men's basketball action at Jim Gremmels Court.
The Cougars built a 10-point first half lead thanks in part to their defense as they held Northwestern to just 28 percent shooting from the floor (9-for-32) and 10 percent from 3-point range (1-for-10). A 6-0 run gave the Cougars their 10-point lead at 22-12 following layups from
James Sukanen,
Jeffrey Halverson, and
Jeremy Halverson. Northwestern cut the lead to 6, but a
CD Douglas lay-in late in the half gave the Cougars a 28-20 lead going into the break.
Northwestern spent the first part of the second half cutting into the Cougar lead and they took their first lead at 48-47 following a Tanner Youngberg putback with 10:30 remaining. The Eagles continued to put the pressure on and built their lead to as high as 10 with 1:53 remaining. Northwestern shot 56 percent from the floor in the second half and outscored the Cougars 55-38.
Douglas, playing in his final home game, had a near double-double with 21 points and nine rebounds.
