Cougars fall in two tight contests

CLERMONT, Fla. - Minnesota Morris plated a total of nine runs over two games Monday, but fell in both contests to Delaware Valley (8-4) and Scranton (6-5).

Against Delaware Valley, the Cougars led 2-1 after one. Michelle O'Rourke connected with a two-out, two-run single that scored Autumn Mahoney and Megan Knickerbocker.

It remained 2-1 until the fourth when Delaware Valley scored four times in the frame and added three more in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead. The Cougars would get two back in the sixth. A Kallie Wycoff single plated Madison Kugler-Hoekstra and that was followed by a Mahoney double that scored Wycoff.

Knickerbocker went 2-for-4.

Against Scranton, the Cougars allowed six first inning runs, but held them scoreless the rest of the way as they attempted a comeback.

UMM cut their lead in half in the top of the third. A Wycoff 2-RBI single scored Mahoney and Knickerbocker. Later, Nicole Newham drew a bases loaded walk to make it 6-3.

The Cougars got an RBI single from Lacey Sullivan in the fourth and got scored off an error in the fifth to trim their deficit to 6-5. UMM went down in order in the final two innings though to halt the comeback attempt.

Lydia Mann pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to keep the Cougars in the game.

Minnesota Morris (2-10) wraps up Florida play tomorrow.
