Walk-off win in extras highlights doubleheader sweep of Northland

MORRIS, Minn. - Minnesota Morris are now winners of four straight following a doubleheader sweep Saturday of Northland that included an 11th-inning walk-off win in the nightcap in UMAC softball action at Big Cat Stadium.

Game 1: UMM 6, NC 4
The Cougars got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the first inning. A Kallie Wycoff sacrifice fly scored Megan Knickerbocker for the game's first run. Autumn Mahoney followed with a single up the middle to score Emily Nordquist. UMM added a run in the third on another sacrifice fly by Lacey Sullivan to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. Northland tied the contest with a three-run fifth, but the Cougars quickly countered with two in their half of the fifth to reclaim the advantage. Nordquist singled and later scored on a wild pitch. Clare Hamer added UMM's third sacrifice fly to plate Sullivan. The Cougars added a key insurance run in the sixth to go up 6-3. Northland got a run across in the seventh, but winning pitcher Madison Langrehr stopped the rally from there to record the win. Nordquist and Mahoney each recorded three hits in the opener.

Game 2: UMM 4, NC 3 (11 innings)
Minnesota Morris came back three times in the second game to earn the doubleheader sweep. The Lumberjills went up 1-0 in the third before the Cougars used small ball to tie the game at 1 in the fifth. Northland plated a run in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. The Cougars would even the score again with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Morgan Mathews hit a pinch-hit single and later moved to second. She would score the game-tying run on an RBI single from Lydia Mann to send the game to extras. In the circle, Mann kept Northland scoreless through the eighth, ninth, and tenth innings. With runners placed on the second base to start the 11th inning, Northland went on top for the third time in the game on an RBI single. Langrehr came on in relief to retire the final three batters. Wycoff started the Cougar 11th on second base and was moved to third on a bunt hit from Mahoney. Hamer singled through the left side to score Wycoff to tie the game at 3. Madison Kugler-Hoekstra sent everybody home with an RBI single to score Mahoney for the winning run. Paige Dahlberg went 3-for-4. Megan Knickerbocker, Mahoney, and Hamer each collected two hits.
