Cougars lose twice to Bethany

ST. PAUL, Minn. - A day after playing a doubleheader in Duluth, the Minnesota Morris baseball team traveled south to St. Paul to face Bethany Lutheran in a UMAC baseball doubleheader at Northwestern's field turf. The Vikings put together big innings late in both contests to take the twin-bill from the Cougars.

Game 1: BLC 14, UMM 2
Bethany scored two in the first to take an early lead, but the Cougars countered with two in the second to even the score. With two runners on, Zach Kuefler delivered an RBI single through the left side to score Bryce Jergenson. Mitch Baumann followed with an RBI double to left to plate Blaise Fairbanks to tie the game at 2. Starting pitcher Sam Melchior held the Vikings at bay until the fourth when they tallied four runs to take the lead. They added three in the fifth and five in the sixth to put an early end to the contest. Fairbanks went 2-for-3 for the Cougars.

Game 2: BLC 12, UMM 2
The Vikings put an abrupt end to the second game. After the Cougars tied the game at 2 in the top of the seventh, BLC exploded for 10 in the bottom half to end the game. In the top of the seventh, Blake Haugen and Nash Kramer singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Haugen later scored the tying run on a fielder's choice. Starting pitcher Michael Head held Bethany to two runs through six innings, striking out five.

Minnesota Morris (3-17, 2-4 in UMAC) is scheduled to finally have their home opener Tuesday against North Central at 1:30 at the Cougar Diamond.
