MORRIS, Minn. - Playing for the final time on their impromptu home field for the 2018 season at Big Cat Stadium, the Minnesota Morris softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Martin Luther Wednesday afternoon by scores of 13-4 and 13-9.
Game 1: MLC 13, UMM 4
Martin Luther scored five times in the first to gain a big early lead in the opener. Minnesota Morris scored their first runs in the fourth inning.
Autumn Mahoney opened the frame circling the bases following an error.
Clare Hamer and
Morgan Mathews followed with singles and Hamer later scored to cut MLC's lead to 7-2. The Cougars added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Emily Nordquist, Hamer, and Mathews all had two hits for the Cougars.
Game 2: MLC 13, UMM 9
Like the first game, Martin Luther jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The Cougars would pull within 7-6 after scoring five in the third and one in the fourth. UMM drew two bases loaded walks in the third and got an RBI single from
Madison Kugler-Hoekstra.
Megan Knickerbocker led off the fourth with a single to left and advanced to third on an error. She later scored on a wild pitch. The Knights jumped it back to a seven-run lead with a six-run top of the fifth. Knickerbocker went 3-for-4 in the nightcap.
Minnesota Morris (10-24) hits the road for a doubleheader Saturday at UW-Superior.
